Brown Color Combos: Rust & Green/Teal/Mint

Today I am continuing my brown color combos series...which may surprise you if you think this color is only suited to fall and winter. But the Pantone spring/summer colors for 2026 include a dark, rich brown among its neutrals; coffee bean is "a deeply roasted bold brown with a smoky, chocolatey and nutty appearance." Pantone specifically calls out their neutral selections as "seasonless shades: a range of trans-seasonal neutrals [that] underpin the foundation."

While 2026's color of the year is officially Cloud Dancer white, I think that in reality, you could argue that 2026 is the year of Brown! I asked the Google AI its opinion of the seasonality of brown, and it agreed that brown is everywhere in 2026. This is great news because if you've purchased some brown items (or pulled some from the back of the closet), you don't need to put them away on account of the calendar! Keep working those brown pieces all year long. And if you're looking to add more brown to your wardrobe, there's never been a better time.

Brown is a year-round color

So regardless of where March falls on the "lion to lamb"/"winter to spring" continuum where you live, brown is a worthy color for the outfits you're wearing this month...and for the rest of the year. (And if you're in the southern hemisphere heading into fall, brown is of course a slam dunk!)

But what about brown with rust and green/blue-green colors? Isn't that combination too fall-like to wear in March? Au contraire. On the accent color side, the SS 2026 colors include a lovely teal (alexandrite) and two shades of rusty reds (lava falls and burnt sienna) that work beautifully with brown. I am highlighting five OOTD that incorporate brown, rust, and some shade of green/mint/teal for some inspiration.

First, I want to share a pair of rust pants from CJ Banks that have been an unexpected workhorse in my wardrobe. This winter I hit the 30 wears mark for these pants, and I have really only gotten started in exploring the variety of outfits that I could make using these pants. You'll see these pants in a few of the outfits below. (For a plethora of rust inspiration, check out my past rust-centric posts listed here.)

Now, on to the outfits...

Outfit #1: In this look, the rust and dark aqua take center stage for an unusual but very appealing color combination. (Note that I wore this outfit last April, and I did not feel at all seasonally confused in it.) In this case, the vibrancy of the rust-red color serves as a bit of a pop of color in my outfit. I certainly could have worn a less eye-catching neutral color of pants instead, but I like the energy from the rust. I just realized that I also put on a bit of lipstick in a muted color that coordinates very well with the pants, which probably helps make the look more harmonious.

My "fall foliage" (not worn only in fall) print blouse doesn't include the reddish-rust tone of my pants, but the combination works well because the rust color is related to the light warm brown color in the top. This is another example of what I call the "family resemblance" approach to color matching.

Using the January 2025 Curated Bead Box, I made this necklace specifically to pair with this blouse in a low-key (haha) way because the color palette was spot on with the blouse. I based my design on the first necklace in this video tutorial by Turquoise Street, which was literally the first time (and perhaps still the only time) I had mimicked anyone's design! (The only difference was I used one of the keys for my pendant instead of the chandelier finding.) But as she laid out her beads, I knew this would make a perfect necklace to match my blouse, so I couldn't resist.

Grounding a colorful outfit with neutral shoes is a nice option, and my dark brown leather flats from Frye both repeated the brown from the fall foliage print and tied back to the darker blonde tones in my hair for a subtle bookending effect. (If you have brown hair, the bookending would be even stronger.)

My daily bracelet stack is based on a paper bead bracelet set I made to coordinate with this blouse in shades of navy, rust, olive, and beige with silver (see page to bead details in this post). I supplemented the set with rust, navy, orange, and olive beaded bracelets for a pleasantly diverse but well-integrated stack. {stretch bracelet tutorial} {bicone paper bead tutorial} {tube paper bead tutorial}

I also made a pair of bead soup earrings to match the color palette of the paper bead bracelet set, using the simple "bead stack with metal motif beads" style (design #3 in this post). I like to make "matching" jewelry that uses the same/similar colors and motifs but different beads; it creates an appearance that is more cohesive than putting random pieces together but with more visual interest than a matchy-matchy set. Everybody has their own preferences in this regard (none of them are "wrong" either!), but I think this "intentionally coordinated but not all the same" point is my sweet spot. I certainly don't always do things this way, but it's sort of my sartorial center of gravity where I find myself landing more often than not.

Outfit #2: The rust pants and brown leather flats make another appearance, this time with a teal blouse with a rust stripe that straight up matches the color of the pants. I added a layered necklace made from 3 disparate pieces in my wardrobe: a white pearl necklace that repeats the white stripe in the top and two brown pieces to repeat the color of the shoes (beaded necklace from Fire Mountain Gems; sloth pendant still available here).

Outfit #3: Why yes, I do like this rust pants + brown leather flats combination! Here I created a mint green "modern twin set" from a button up shirt (with little black hummingbirds embroidered on it) and a sweater vest, and I tied the mint, brown, and rust colors together with the print scarf. I think the modern twin set color formula of same/similar colored top + topper piece is a vastly under-appreciated technique for creating cohesive outfits. I find that it's particularly suitable for those of us with soft coloring because the contrast level between the top and topper is low, but you can create any level of contrast you desire by selecting a scarf/statement necklace/etc. that pops against it.

Outfit #4: Now for an outfit with my still-relatively-new dark rust corduroy skirt (discussed here) in a classic March-is-still-winter-in-Minnesota combination. However, I could easily keep the same idea for a different sort of weather by substituting the specific pieces but keeping the same colors in place. For example, I could wear a short-sleeved green T with my rust pants, brown flats, and a lightweight print scarf or multi-colored necklace for a much warmer version of the look.

Some people are very adventurous in choosing tights and boots in their outfits, but this is an area where I generally keep things simple. In this case, the closest neutral to the dark rust of the skirt is brown, so I just added dark brown tights and ankle boots. This creates an understated bottom half that doesn't compete with the colorful statement of the sweater and scarf. To me, this is 100% the cold weather version of wearing the brown leather flats with the rust pants.

It's almost impossible to tell, but I am wearing another "modern twin set" in this look: an emerald green long-sleeved T underneath an emerald green cardigan. I got very lucky that I happened to stumble across an inexpensive t-shirt at Kohls that happened to match my thrifted CJ Banks cardigan! But of course a pullover sweater or buttoned up cardigan in green would work as well. The boldly striped scarf (thrifted) certainly pulls the colors together, but I believe this would also look great as a colorblocked outfit without the scarf.

My bracelet is a DIY piece with a wild assortment of beads on 6 rounds of memory wire. You will not be shocked to learn that I made this bracelet specifically in colors to match the striped scarf.

My earrings are also inspired by the scarf. I strung 6/0 seed beads from a seed bead mix onto premade earring hoops for the world's easiest DIY earring (see design #1 in this post). My seed bead mix didn't include all the colors of the scarf, so I just pulled out some colors that coordinated.

With this coordinated scarf, memory wire bracelet, and earrings, I have a nice little accessory set/"beauty bundle" that I could wear with a lot of outfits. Brown T + coral pants...white T + pink cardigan + jeans...aqua sweater + brown pants...beige top + brown cardigan + green pants...brown sweater + gold skirt...orchid sweater + teal pants...green top + pink pants...I could go on and on this way just using the items currently in my wardrobe.

Outfit #5: My final OOTD takes a very multi-colored approach with dark teal T, olive pants, rust vest, and brown flats - but because these colors are all relatively low-intensity neutral/semi-neutral ones, they don't create color overwhelm. This outfit would look fine colorblocked, but consistent with my default style choice, the scarf is the bridge piece that ties it all together. I love how the fox paper pendant {tutorial here} pops against the t-shirt, and my bracelet stack creates harmony by repeating the main colors of my outfit.

OOTD #5: 11/25/22

In these five OOTD, the brown color acts as a supporting act for the rust and green/mint/teal stars, though of course the colors can be combined in any amounts you prefer. I just wanted to show that outfits need not be built with a dominant neutral color and sprinkles of accent colors, which I see presented as the norm over and over again. You can instead use accent colors and prints as your focus, grounding them with a smaller amount of a neutral color (or colors).

Google AI agrees:

neutrals and accent colors - neutral heavy
neutrals and accent colors - neutral heavy

For further inspiration using these colors, check out my previous posts featuring brown with green & white, teal, and rust.

Do you have a preference for neutral-heavy vs. accent-heavy outfits? Would you wear brown, rust, and a green/blue-green color together? Does brown still feel like a "fall" color to you? Do you pay attention to color trends?

I've always been a huge fan of brown, and I love how you included all kinds of color combinations. I don't get your emails anymore so I forget to come over to visit...I'm so sorry. XOXO Jodie

Sally, you're outfits are so well thought out and coordinated, right down to the smallest detail! You have really worked your browns in creatively for all seasons. I am always interested in the trending colors, but they don't always suit me, so some years I mostly sit them out, except for an experimental piece or two. Aside from the many shades of brown, there are some gorgeous, and rather unusual soft muted hues being shown for spring and summer. For those with soft coloring, this is the year for you! Thanks for sharing, and enjoy your week!

I really have been surprised with how much I like brown. Don't have much of it, but really like it.
