6 Scarves 2021: September Additions, #5 Brown & Black, Nelly

For an introduction to the 6 Scarves 2021 project, see this post.

For a description of my method, see this post.

This scarf and color palette seem so autumn-like to me that I'm excited to start seeing fall items entering this wardrobe.

So of course three of the new tops are sleeveless...what? The logic of this will become more apparent later in this post. Meanwhile we are also adding a comfy short-sleeved exercise top and, in what I think many people will agree is an appropriately fall-like item, a long-sleeved teal floral blouse.

September Tops: #5 Brown & Black, Nelly

Black Cheshire tank - Disney Alice/Kohls - XL - $24.00 - 5/2016

Teal/black floral lace-up blouse - ana/JCP - 1X - $18.74 - 9/2017

Very dark teal tank - CJ Banks - 2X - $6.29 - 5/2020

Black pleated tank - Croft & Barrow/Kohls - 1X - $14.99 - 5/2018

Medium teal heather exercise T - Xersion/JCP - ?

Our bottom piece for September is a pair of black "polished" (i.e., rather slim and neat) capri pants, which is again, no the most obvious choice. We have three toppers this month: a slightly over-sized plaid shirt that I prefer using as a shirt-jacket to layer over another top and two drapey cardigans in dark aqua-teal and maroon. I have had these cardigans for quite a while, so they are a size Large, which is a size this plus-size bod does not wear anymore! However, these cardigans continue to fit very well except the arms are a bit too small. This makes them the perfect summer-to-fall transition layering piece when worn with a sleeveless top. Even though they are not the definitely not the most versatile pieces in my closet, they continue to prove their worth in my wardrobe due to how much I like layering them in the spring and fall.

Black polished capris - Croft & Barrow/Kohls - 20W - $19.99 - 5/2018

Maroon cardigan - Coldwater Creek - L - $14.99 - 3/2014

This is a pretty fun array of accessories with plenty of black, dark aqua/teal, and maroon options. Five of my DIY bead creations are joining the wardrobe this month as well as four scarves now that the weather is starting to become more scarf-friendly. These black-and-white geometric pattern flats are made from a very comfortable knit fabric, and I'm looking forward to seeing some delightful print mixes as we put them into action.

Let's start with our most obvious fall-like garment, the teal floral blouse. This blouse has a tie front at the neckline, so a necklace is quite optional, but I do sometimes like to wear a necklace above the neckline. For this outfit, I'm keeping things simple with a DIY seed bead multi-strand necklace and world's easiest DIY earrings with a range of aqua and teal glass pearls and gold spacer beads. The highly overlapping color schemes and distance between the pieces results in a blouse/shoe print mix that is very easy on the eyes.

Outfit #2 features one of my very favorite top/topper + scarf combinations: the plaid shirt-jacket and geometric print scarf. I really like both of these pieces individually, to a large extent because the colors are just so terrific (and personally flattering to wear), but I also enjoy the way these two pieces come together. They are one of my top "happy matches" in my wardrobe. Now you can see where the teal exercise top come in, as a layering piece to wear under the shirt-jacket, which I prefer to wear open.

Now it's time to put these size Large cardigans and sleeveless tops through their paces. Of course I adore this Cheshire Cat graphic tank, and I will wear it with a lot of different accent colors. But for a very cohesive look, I paired it with the dark aqua-teal cardigan that bears a family resemblance to the aqua stripes on the cat image. I used the very colorful print scarf to bring some extra color into the look.

Outfit #4 begins with a very basic black column, then jazzes things up with the addition of the maroon cardigan and accessories. When wearing an infinity scarf or square scarf that is tied to wear more around the neck and without any long drapey bits, I often will wear a long pendant to add an extra bit of verticality to the look.

Finally, I couldn't resist putting in one more summer-weight outfit for those quite warm days that sometimes pop up in September and October. I'm envisioning the scarf worn as a make-shift kimono for some light coverage over the tank. I think the black and dark teal give this a more autumn-feeling look even though the pieces are quite suitable for warm weather. Though Minnesota has a more prototypical 4-season climate, I spent enough time living in places like OK, TX, and NC to be on board with the "wears like summer, looks like fall" color palette tricks of September and October.

Today's garment focus features the teal floral blouse that I purchased after seeing Julia at When the Girls Rule wear it with white jeans in August 2017 as a fall transition piece. (I liked it so much, I ended up buying the black and purple/pink floral versions too! The long back makes it a great item to pair with leggings, skinny jeans/pants, or a close-fitting pencil skirt.)

This first outfit was a simple September office look featuring the floral blouse, grey check pants for a very subtle print mix, and bright teal ballet flats. You can see that I wore a small necklace to peek out from the neckline; this one is a pretty black and clear crystal swooshy piece that was a gift from my mom.

This March work outfit features black with a pop of white in the form of a textured pencil skirt. This skirt is a pretty classic summer piece, but I find it easy to wear year-round (especially since it's lined and thus doesn't stick to tights). Given that March is most definitely cold and still what most people would call winter, warm layers are still called for, but adding a lighter/brighter piece can give you more of that spring-time vibe.

Finally, here is another March outfit, this time geared for casual Friday with the addition of a denim jacket. I liked the print mix of the teal floral blouse and black polka dot skirt, and the white scarf gave me that lighter spring-like element to the look.

Our rabbit addition to the Nelly menagerie is this delightful little bunny: Sara the black Mini Satin! Doesn't she have a gorgeous smooth coat? I love seeing bunnies in this cute upright stance. This standing on the hind legs posture means about what you'd expect: she wants to check out what's going on around her, out of curiosity or to make sure the environment is safe. As a rabbit at the state fair, she had plenty of strange humans to look at!

Do you like to start wearing fall/spring colors in your outfits around September/March, even if the weather is still like summer/winter? Do you feel sad to see these seasons pass by so quickly? I am always disappointed that fall turns to winter and spring turns to summer so fast!

In my next capsule post, we will look at the last of our September additions: the #6 Grey & Navy, Sophia wardrobe.
