OOTD: Clown Fortune Teller

There is a certain style of plus size garment that has ALL THE THINGS going on at once: color, print, texture, sequins, embroidery, ruffles, random drawings of skinny women next to the Eiffel Tower and a giant croissant... you name the embellishment, it's there. Add in cheap, scratchy polyester fabric and you have the style that I call "clown fortune teller." Fortunately, this is not the current norm for plus size clothing, but it's still out there.

But perhaps I have been too quick to dismiss the "clown fortune teller" look! I decided to put my own spin on this style concept.

If we want to say "clown," clearly bright, colorful stripes are a classic approach. So I started with my circus tent striped skirt and the rainbow striped scarf I bought to go with it. But how about the "fortune teller" aspect? This makes me think of drapey fabrics and loose silhouettes, so a simple T with a long flowy vest was added to the mix. For the scarf ring, I used the elastic + shank button trick with a button that looks like a clock as a nod to "reading the future." Because I didn't want this outfit to look like an outright costume, I kept the other accessories understated, wore minimal makeup, and put my hair in simple braids.

OOTD 5/12/21:

Circus tent striped skirt - thrifted, Target/Goodwill - XXL - $3.99 - 10/2018

Black knot top - Croft & Barrow/Kohls - 2X - $10.71 - 12/2019

Admiral blue open vest - thrifted, Joseph A/ThredUp - 3X - $13.66 - 8/2020

Rainbow striped silky scarf - thrifted, ThredUp - $12.99 - 5/2020

Blue pointy-toed flats - BP/Nordstrom - $49.95 - 12/2014

This would have been a LOT of look to wear to the office, but for WFH, I looked normal enough from the waist up to fake my way through my Microsoft Teams meetings like a semi-responsible adult.

P.S. Google "clown fortune teller" at your own risk. There is a creepy Halloween thing that I will never un-see.

I am about 99.99% confident I have never before been inspired to create an outfit based on my own derisive term for a style I dislike. But it was fun! How about you?

Haha, yes, the title does not inspire confidence does it! But I agree with you on bright colors.
